Business-Class Flights to Israel: What Hikers Need to Know Before the Long Haul

Israel is not a destination you ease into. The trails here, through the Galilee highlands, the Negev desert, the Judean Hills, the long spine of the Israel National Trail, tend to start demanding things almost immediately: elevation, heat, uneven stone, dry air, and days that begin early. For most hikers flying from the US, that first morning on the ground comes after ten or eleven hours in the air, a seven- or eight-hour time difference, and whatever sleep the flight allowed.

That gap between plane and trailhead is where business-class flights to Israel earn their place on an active trip. Not for the luxury of it, but for what it preserves: the ability to move well on day one, rather than spending that day recovering from the flight.

This article covers which airlines currently fly business class to Israel from the US, what to expect on board, and how to choose the right routing for a hiking trip in Israel.

Why Business Class is Worth It for an Active Trip

From the US East Coast, a flight to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) runs about 11 to 12 hours. From the West Coast, it can stretch to 16. At that length, the cabin class travelers choose shapes how they step off the plane, and how ready they are for what comes next.

  • A lie-flat seat changes the recovery equation. Sleeping upright in economy for an entire transatlantic night rarely gives the body enough rest, especially before a trip that may open with long walks, trail transfers, or a full day outdoors. The ability to sleep horizontally, even for a few hours, makes a meaningful difference in how travelers feel on that first morning on the ground.

  • Space matters too, in ways that are easy to underestimate before a long-haul flight. Hours in a narrow seat leave the legs, back, and shoulders tight before the trail even begins. Business-class cabins offer more room to stretch and shift position, and many provide direct aisle access, making it easier to stand, walk, and keep the body moving through the night.

  • Israel’s terrain doesn’t leave much margin for fatigue carried over from the flight. Itineraries across the Galilee, the Negev, or multi-day sections of the Israel National Trail involve uneven ground, changing weather, and long days outdoors from the start. Dehydration, stiffness, and broken sleep compound quickly in those conditions. Arriving in better shape isn’t a luxury consideration; it’s a practical one.

Airlines Offering Business-Class Flights to Israel

The route landscape for US travelers has shifted considerably since 2023, and it’s worth understanding before booking. As of May 2026, the major US carriers, United, Delta, and American, have suspended Tel Aviv service through at least September 2026, following the escalation of the regional conflict earlier this year. That leaves two reliable paths for business-class flights to Tel Aviv: a nonstop flight on El Al, or a one-stop connection through a European hub.

El Al Israel Airlines

El Al is currently the only airline offering nonstop business-class flights from the US to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV), and it operates from five gateways:

  • John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Miami International Airport (MIA)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS)

The most frequent EL AL business-class flights to Tel Aviv depart from New York (JFK), with up to five daily departures between Monday and Friday. For travelers prioritizing the shortest possible travel time and the most direct path to the trail, a nonstop El Al flight is the practical default in the current environment.

EL AL  Business-Class Cabins

EL AL operates flights from the US to Tel Aviv using Boeing 787-8, Boeing 787-9, and Boeing 777 aircraft.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner

These planes feature EL AL’s largest Dreamliner business-class cabin, with 32 seats across eight rows. The cabin uses Recaro CL6710 lie-flat seats in a staggered 1-2-1 layout. For travelers planning an active itinerary after arrival, this layout is an advantage because it allows them to move during the flight without disturbing other passengers.

Window seats alternate between more private positions closer to the window and positions closer to the aisle, while the center seats work well for couples. Although they sit side by side, the center seats still have a privacy divider.

The seats convert into fully flat beds of about 78 inches (198 cm), and the cabin has the quiet, bright feel associated with the Dreamliner, thanks to its large windows.

Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

This aircraft model offers a smaller version of the same core business-class product, with 20 seats across five rows. The smaller cabin can feel more contained and be quieter on overnight flights.

EL AL’s upgraded Boeing 777-200ER business-class cabin now has 28 seats across seven rows, also in a 1-2-1 layout. This retrofit replaced the older 2-3-2 business-class cabin, which was quite uncomfortable for travelers in window or middle seats.

Boeing 777

The Boeing 777 is a wider aircraft, and thus, EL AL selected Safran Optima Elite seats for the upgraded cabin. These pods, which feature 78-inch (198 cm) flat beds, alternate between forward-facing and aisle-angled positions, which means the level of privacy each traveler gets depends mainly on the row they sit in.

The seats also have sliding privacy dividers, although they’re not tall enough to transform the seat into an enclosed suite. Still, travelers can use the dividers to get more privacy during their flight, especially if they would like to get some rest.

Overall, EL AL business class offers travelers a broadly similar experience, regardless of their departure point on US–Israel flights.

European Airlines Flying to Israel from the US

Travelers can also find one-stop flights to Israel from major US airports with several European airlines. Among them are Lufthansa, Air France, ITA Airways, and British Airways.

  • Lufthansa, for instance, offers business-class flights to Israel from Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Houston, and other hubs. These include a layover at either Frankfurt Airport (FRA) or Munich Airport (MUC).

Both hubs have well-equipped Lufthansa lounges with shower facilities and full meal service, which makes the layover a genuine reset between the transatlantic segment and the final leg.

  • Air France also offers business-class flights to Tel Aviv from major cities, including Houston, Minneapolis, and New York. These flights have a layover at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), only 4 hours away from Tel Aviv.

The Air France lounges at CDG are among the most comfortable in Europe, featuring self-service buffets, showers, and even on-site spa facilities.

  • With ITA Airways, travelers can depart for Rome from cities such as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and Miami, then take a short business-class flight to Tel Aviv

The Fiumicino lounges are a solid stop for travelers who want to eat and rest before the short final segment to Tel Aviv. For travelers who prefer a southern European layover, this kind of stop can provide a more comfortable break between the long transatlantic segment and the final flight to Tel Aviv.

However, although layovers add several hours to the trip, they can leave travelers feeling well rested and ready to explore Israel’s sights upon arrival.

Final Thoughts

For hiking trips, the best flight is not only the shortest one; it is the one that leaves the body ready for the first day of exploration.

A nonstop EL AL flight offers the shortest travel time, while a well-planned one-stop flight through Europe can also be a good option if the long-haul segment offers travelers an opportunity to rest during the flight or during a layover. The cabin, aircraft, and timing all matter because the trip continues after landing, often on foot.

For travelers heading to the Galilee, the Negev, the Judean Hills, or the Israel National Trail, business-class flights to Israel offer more than a better seat. They help turn the long-haul flight into a calm transition between the cross-Atlantic journey and the trail.
